GERRY CROSSAN SAID the Gods were smiling on the Donegal Schoolboys Under-13s in Saturday’s SFAI Inter-League semi-final against Athlone.
Donegal snatched a dramatic win at the end of extra time when Blake McGarvey headed home, just after replacement Donegal goalkeeper Paddy McGarvey saved a penalty from Athlone’s Dyland Gavin.
“That’s the way to end a match, isn’t it?” smiled Crossan.
“It’s great when it goes that way for you.
“The Gods were kind to us. I felt confident. The bottle spun for us here.
“The kids are delighted, the parents are happy and so are we. We have worked hard, this is our 31st game this year. It’s fantastic reward.”
Crossan put Paddy McGarvey on with just a few minutes remaining and he sensed that penalties were on the cards.
However, while there was no need for a shoot-out, the sub ‘keeper did have to face a penalty – and he saved it before Donegal went down the other end to score the winner.
Crossan said: “We made a few changes. We had practised penalties and we had an idea who we wanted on the pitch.
“I was just there on the edge of my toes hoping that the ball would drop nicely – and it did.”
