GAVIN CULLEN WAS delighted to see his Cockhill Celtic win the ‘bonus’ of the Knockalla Caravans Cup yesterday.
Malachy McDermott opened the scoring and Ronan ‘Ollie’ Doherty bagged a brace as Cockhill defeated Glengad United 3-0 to win the Cup, just four days after they clinched the Ulster Senior League.
“Today is a bonus,” player-manager Cullen said after the Knockalla win at Maginn Park.
“We regrouped at the start of the season and the League was our priority – it was everything.
“It’s fantastic for the group of players and we still have another final to go.”
Cockhill have yet to play Intermediate Cup finalists Letterkenny Rovers in the League Cup final, with the chance of a treble for the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds residents.
Cullen has been a vocal advocate of late for the retention of the ailing USL and after yesterday’s final he again urged the power brokers to come up with a solution.
He said: “The product is good and I just wish the people in power would sit down and get it sorted. It’s not going to effect or benefit me – but it’s for young, up-and-coming players.
“Look at Derry City and Finn Harps: A good 20 players have come out of the Ulster Senior League to play for their squads now. It would be a disaster if we lost the Ulster Senior League.”
