WHOEVER SAID THREE into one didn’t go?
Last Sunday afternoon, Erne Wanderers were in third place in the CT Ball Division 2 and were headed to the Athletic Grounds in Lifford where Deele Harps were one of the two sides in front of them. It was the last day of the season.
A goal in each half from Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward meant the three points the the visitors but it also made for a nervous wait for the Ballyshannon team.
Glenree United were also in contention but they could only manage a 0-0 draw at Curragh Athletic, which meant that Alan Dorrian’s were crowned champions.
“It’s massive progress,” Dorrian said. “This is our sixth season back and we made the move to Sunday. We’ve a reserve team now.”
Erne Wanderers, in those six years, have won both the Saturday titles, Division 2 and Division 1, but made the plunge to join the Sunday league.
On Sunday as they made their way through Barnesmore, their ambition was the same as it was before a ball was kicked last autumn.
“At the start of the season we wanted promotion,” Dorrian said of the move. “We needed to win our game and thankfully it all fell into place If the Sunday team is successful then it breeds success.
“It’s been very competitive. Any one of the three teams could’ve finished in the three positions. We’re always looking to challenge. Last year we wanted to go Sunday and the aim is to get to the Premier Division. Next year in Division One is about getting consolidated and then we can try and take it from there.”
