LETTERKENNY ROVERS WERE cruelly knocked out of the FAI Cup in this evening’s second round replay.
A goal in the tie’s 208th minute – factoring in Saturday’s 0-0 draw in the midlands – from Alan O’Sullivan, as he placed Emeka Onwubiko past Rory Kelly in the Rovers goal won it 1-0 for Athlone.
[adrotate group=”64″]The goal changed the entire atmosphere at Leckview Park, which has seldom looked as well as it did this evening with the sun setting in the west.
It was Letterkenny Rovers’ 12th and their last national cup fixture in a marathon season. It was another contest they won’t forget.
[adrotate group=”41″]“You can’t fault the lads,” McConigley said. “You have to take the good with the bad and I felt we didn’t get that rub off the green. It was one of the hottest evenings I can remember in Leckview. I always worried they’d get a goal.
“It was fantastic to be involved in that. I said to the lads in there to keep their heads up. We’ve done Donegal soccer proud. Someone had to lose tonight.
“I was concentrating from Christmas on on their mental approach. I wasn’t afraid going to Athlone and wasn’t afraid tonight. To me, we’ve had a roller-coaster season. You have to give it to the players.”
