DECLAN BOYLE WILL opt to focus on the positives whilst working on erasing the negatives from his Finn Harps Under-17 side.
On Saturday, Boyle’s side lost 2-1 against Sligo Rovers at The Moss.
First-half goals by Mark Byrne and Gary Higgins helped Sligo gain the upper hand, but Harps did make a good first of it, aided by Corrie-Lee Bogan’s second-half strike.
Boyle, who captained Harps to the First Division title in 2004 and has played at Celtic, Derry City and Sligo himself, is guiding these young charges on a voyage he hopes will culminate in some of them breaking into the first team at Finn Park.
“We asked the guys to go out and start well, but we didn’t do that,” he said of Saturday’s loss.
“We didn’t defend well in the first half and they took their opportunities.
“At 2-0 down it was always going to be an uphill struggle. The learning curve for us is that we will work on our defence. The heads were down after the first goal.”
Boyle’s team began with a 3-0 win over Drogheda United, but they then lost 3-2 at Athlone Town, while they take on Bohemians in Dublin this weekend. Boyle was pleased, at least, with his team’s second-half display.
He said: “We asked them to go out and win the second half and they did that. They had momentum after we got the goal and it spurred us on a bit.
“We had a lot of pressure and we had a goal chalked off too. We couldn’t ask for anymore than we got in the second half.”
