DECLAN BONNER’S voice told the story of what the Donegal Under-21 boss called ‘heart-stopping stuff’ as his team defeated Derry in the Ulster Under-21 quarter-final.
Stephen McBrearty’s free deep into injury time gave Donegal a 0-14 to 2-7 win over the Oak Leaf.
Goals by Niall Loughlin and Ruairi McElwee had Derry in front, only for Donegal to strike back just in the nick of time – and Bonner wasn’t impressed by his team’s defending.
“It wasn’t that Derry got back into the game – we let Derry back into the game,” he told Donegal Sport Hub.
“The mistakes were terrible. If an under-12 team did that we’d be giving out, but we came back well to get the scores late on.
“We played well in spells, but we let it slip. We pride ourselves in our defending. We need to look at ourselves in terms of our defensive shape and we allowed runners to get at us. The second goal was a comedy.”
Donegal will play Tyrone in two weeks’ time in the Ulster Under-21 semi-final.
