IT’S OVER 17 years now since his last professional bout but Danny ‘Boy’ Ryan still has the look of a man who could pack quite the punch.
Ryan was the Irish senior middleweight champion in 1993 when the Raphoe ABC puncher overcame Moate’s Denis Galvin to win the title.
He was the recipient of the boxing award at the Donegal Sports Star Awards for five consecutive years from 1990-1994.
Ryan turned pro in 1995 and defeated Paul Matthews in Shepton Mallet in his first professional contest.
By the time he hung up the gloves, he was 10-3-2, his last contest a defeat to Jon Penn by TKO in the fourth round at the Ulster Hall in Belfast in November 1998.
“Great memories,” he told Donegal Sport Hub.
“Getting out of Ulster was a big thing in those times and getting to Dublin was massive – as was getting the decision in Dublin.”
