HE WAITED OVER 40 months for it so it was no surprise that Ciaran Coll savoured the moment he broke his goal scoring famine against UCD last night.
In his 170th game for Harps, the full-back netted the only goal of the game after just 24 seconds when he headed home from Wilfried Tagbo’s cross.
It was only Coll’s third goal for Harps, his previous two coming against SD Galway in June 2012.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for another goal. I’m delighted,” he told Donegal Sport Hub.
“It was unbelievable. I came over to the fans and the first person I saw was my dad so I just hugged him.”
The goal was reminiscent of another quick-fire goal for Harps by a full-back from St Johnston.
In September 1994, Maurice Toland scampered forward at the kick-off to get on the end of a cross by Marty McGinley and open the scoring against Drogheda United in the Shield.
Coll said: “The formation we play, Ollie (Horgan) and James (Gallagher) are saying to us all the time to attack the back post. I just took a gamble and away I went. Wilfried’s delivery was excellent – he put it on a plate for me.”
Unable to travel with the team, he was taken to the game by strength and conditioning coach Michael Black and, although his night lasted just 27 minutes, he managed to net the all-important goal in that time.
