IN TERMS OF championship first-timers, from the current Donegal panel Christy Toye is the longest-serving of the contemporaries.
The St Michael’s clubman (pictured above by Geraldine Diver) first featured in the 2002 Ulster SFC preliminary round against Cavan – one match before clubmate Colm McFadden and St Eunan’s Rory Kavanagh first appeared.
Toye is back for the 2016 season with Donegal having started the Allianz League Division 1 well with two wins from two.
“I started most of the games last season and it was a long enough season,” Toye said. “I’ve been back now training with the squad for the last two weeks. It’s important to start to transition more players into the time. It’s important that players are coming though. But so far, so good.
“We’ve a renewed focus. There’s enough experience about the squad. It’s good to increase the competition. It had to come to a point where we need more players.
“For me personally, when you enter you thirties you stake stock at the end of every year. I did the same last year and they year before. I felt I could contribute and more importantly, the management wanted me back too. I didn’t want to walk away.”
