MARTIN CAVANAGH has high hopes that his Carndonagh Community School side can reclaim the Dr Tony O’Neill Cup this year.
After the Carn scholars won the All-Ireland crown last year, the class of this term reclaimed the Ulster title today thanks to a slender 1-0 win over St Eunan’s.
Defender Sam Todd was the match-winner with an 83rd minute goal that was the only difference at The Lakeside.
“Whoever will come out of Connacht won’t look forward to playing us,” Cavanagh said.
“ We’ll give anyone a game and hopefully we can get another day out.
[adrotate group=”46″]“It was a super game today. I think the two sides were evenly matched.
“Some of them are playing Derry and Harps Under-19s.
“They were in testing conditions today and the wind was very strong. Both sides tried to get the ball down and play. It just happened that we got a goal at the last knocking to take us over the line.”
And Cavanagh revealed that Derry City man Todd turned home the winner with a foot that he’d been struggling with in the build-up.
Cavanagh said: “We were worried all week. Sam has been injured. He hurt his right foot and it came onto the right foot, but he put it away with the right foot. That was kind of ironic on the week that was in it.”
