FORMER Donegal captain Barry Monaghan believes that Donegal can overcome Mayo on Saturday to book a place in the All-Ireland semi-finals.
Monaghan, who played Championship football for Donegal from 2001-2010, was a member of the county panel right up until Jim McGuinness’s appointment as manager.
His last game was the Ulster SFC defeat to Down in 2010, while he was an unused sub when Donegal were hammered by Armagh in the subsequent qualifier that drew an end to John Joe Doherty’s tenure as manager.
Monaghan (pictured above with the Dr McKenna Cup in 2009) has kept a close watch on Donegal since his inter-county retirement and fancies them to produce the goods at Croke Park this weekend.
“I’ve a sneaky suspicion that they’ll come through against the odds,” Monaghan told Charlie Collins of Donegal Sport Hub.
“I wouldn’t underestimate Donegal. The Donegal boys are very consistent and their big players usually deliver. They have a game plan they stick to and a game plan they believe in.”
Monaghan played alongside Michael Murphy for four years in the county panel and says the Glenswilly man is ‘a once-in-a-generation player’.
