DONEGAL ENJOYED VICTORY in the Ulster SFC semi-final replay against Monaghan on Saturday, while there was action in the Junior Championship at home.
Last week’s winner was Kieran Gallagher for his performance for Donegal in their Ulster MFC win over Monaghan in Cavan
Have a look at the options below and have a vote. We’ll announce the winner on Friday evening. We have five nominees in our Anthony Conaghan Cars Player of the Week poll this week with the winner set to receive a pair of Murphy’s Gloves.
1 – Martin O’Reilly (Donegal)
The MacCumhaill’s clubman had his best game in a Donegal jersey in the 0-17 to 2-10 victory over Monaghan at Breffni Park on Saturday evening. As well as chipping in three points from play and unlucky not to score a second half goal, O’Reilly provided excellent link-up play for the side managed by Rory Gallagher. O’Reilly also shackled Monaghan’s Karl O’Connell, who had won man of the match in the original meeting of the sides seven days’ beforehand.
2 – Rory Kavanagh (Donegal)
Kavanagh was sent off in the end up at Breffni Park for picking up a second yellow card but the St Eunan’s midfielder had his best game since returning to the county fold against Monaghan. Particularly in the first half, Donegal dominated the tone of the contest with most onlookers of the opinion that Monaghan were fortunate just to be the two points down – 0-10 to 2-2 – at half-time. Kavanagh, who kicked the first point of the day, played his part in that.
3 – Conor Carins (St Mary’s Convoy)
Goalkeeper Cairns ended up on the losing side in St Mary’s 1-9 to 0-9 reversal against Letterkenny Gaels on Sunday afternoon in the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Junior A football championship clash. However, but for the performance of Cairns, the contest would’ve been over long before it was. He made three fine saves to keep his side in it, denying Brendan O’Brien in the first half and then getting the better of Donal O’Malley and substitute Mikey Harte after the break.
4 –Â Colm McColgan (Naomh Padraig, Muff)
McColgan helped himself to five points as Naomh Padraig, Iskaheen drew with Red Hughs at Ture on Sunday. There was much more about McColgan’s display than his five points, which did prove crucial. A real presence around the middle of the park, he was the piston that drove Naomh Padraig forward and he caused Red Hughs no end of problems with his surging runs from deep.
5 – Danny Murphy (Moville)
There was a scoreline controversy at the Carrick Field in Sunday’s Michael Murphy Sports Junior A Championship clash of Moville and Downings. In the end, it was deemed that Moville were 2-13 to 2-12 winners over Downings. Pivotal to that victory was the performance of Danny Murphy, who scored four points – three from play – for the home side. Murphy’s shot, which was saved by Downings goalkeeper Patrick McGroddy, was prodded home by Christy Hegarty for an 18th minute goal.
6 – Gary Ban McClafferty (Downings)
For long spells in Moville on Saturday, it looked as though the performance of Gary Ban McClafferty would earn something for Downings. And indeed, after the score controversy, maybe it might yet. McClafferty hit six points in all for the Downings side who won the Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta last month. In fact it was McClafferty’s late point, which Downings thought had put them in front that wasn’t considered as Murphy’s point at the other end was deemed as the winner.
