John Kelly broke another long-standing shot put record today in Athlone.
The Finn Valley AC man won gold at the Irish Universities Athletics Championships at the Athlone IT this afternoon, shattering a 24-year-old record in the process.
Letterkenny Institute of Technology student Kelly reached out to 16.97 metres to scoop the gold medal.
Just last weekend, Kelly broke the Donegal shot put record when he threw 17.49m at Santry, Dublin, a European B qualification standard.
Kelly’s throw today was a new Irish University record. The previous mark had been set by Victor Costello in 1993.
Costello competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where he finished 22nd in the shot put. He went onto play international rugby with Ireland, the number 8 making 39 senior appearances.
