AIDAN CALLAGHAN continued his good season with a fourth-placed finish at the Lough Neagh Sprint Triathlon in Ballyronan, Co Derry, yesterday.
The Letterkenny 24/7 Triathlon Club member (pictured above by Ken Murphy – TI Media) was in fifth place following the 750m swim and made inroads on the 20km cycle, moving up to third before coming off the bicycle five kilometres from the finish.
Having lost just under a minute and with a few scratches with no major injury, Callaghan recovered to see out the cycle and produce a good 5km run.
Irish international Russell White, from Banbridge, Co Down, was first home in a time of one hour and five seconds.
Second was James Walton from Triangle Triathlon Club – based in Coleraine, Limavady and Magherafelt – in 1:03:08, with Darren Dunne of Nenagh Triathlon Club in Co Tipperary third with 1:03.39. Callaghan was only 11 seconds behind in fourth.
Yesterday’s race was Round 4 in the Super Series, with the Vodafone Dublin City Triathlon, which doubles as the Olympic Length National Championships, taking place this day week in the capital, with bonus points on offer.
The Super Series, which is contested by the top 50 triathletes in the country, accumulates points from the given individual’s best four races from the six scheduled. Thirty-two-year-old Callaghan came in third in first race of the Super Series season at the TriAthy Sprint 2015 in Athy, Co Kildare, in May.
He followed that up with victory in the Sligo Tri Club triathlon last month and will hope to make further progress next weekend before the last race of the season.
The Pulse Port Beach Triathlon – the National Championships over Sprint Length – is due to take place in Clougherhead, Co Louth, on September 26.
