THREE Donegal-based teens have progressed to their respective finals at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi this afternoon.
Glenfin’s Aaron McGlynn (pictured in Tbilisi with his parents Karen and Shaun) came through his 800m heat comfortably in second in a time of 1:57.77, while Arlene Crossan from Letterkenny has qualified for the long jump final with a best of 5.98 metres.
The Loreto Convent student also jumped 5.63 metres and 5.73 metres.
With only two places in the final guaranteed with the two fastest losers from the three heats, McGlynn, running in lane 8, finished behind Szymon Zieba, with the Pole clocking a winning time of 1:57.65. Turkey’s Yener Aras was third in 1:58.04.
Both McGlynn and Crossan are members Finn Valley Athletic Club, as is Sommer Lecky.
She qualified for the final of the high jump this morning, leaping 1.72 metres at the first attempt to seal one of the 12 final berths. The Castlederg, Co Tyrone, native will be back in action on Thursday.
Earlier today, Ciara Neville from Castletroy, Co Limerick, won Ireland’s first gold in Georgia in the 100m in a time of 12.01 seconds.
