ILLIES GOLDEN GLOVES’ DARRYL MORAN was named as Donegal’s best senior boxer last night as the Donegal Boxing Board held its annual awards bash in Donegal town.
The great and the good of Donegal’s sweet science fraternity gathered in the Abbey Hotel to celebrate another successful season.
Illies man Moran succeeds two-in-a-row winner Jason Quigley in collecting the Harry ‘Kid’ Duffy Memorial Cup.
Moran collected his sixth Irish title last December when he took the National Intermediate crown at 48kgs.
The explosive Illies puncher also competed at the 2014 European Youth Championships in Croatia, where he only lost out at the quarter-final stage to England’s Niall Farrell.
The light-flyweight now moves into senior level and will target Ulster Senior and Irish Senior Championships.
The Moran brothers – Leigh, John and Darryl – have won 14 Irish titles between them.
John Moran was the recipient of the Billy ‘Spider’ Kelly Memorial Cup for Best Youth Boxer of the season.
A big night for the Buncrana club was completed when the Illies Golden Gloves club were confirmed as the winner of Club of the Year, for which they received the Jimmy Murphy Memorial Cup.

Commonwealth Games bronze medalist from 1970, Paddy Doherty of Ballyshannon, was given a Hall of Fame Award, as was Buncrana’s PJ Halloran.
Labhaoise Clarke, who recently competed in the European Junior Championships in Hungary, was the winner of the Best Female Boxer Award and the Carndonagh ABC woman, a seven-time Irish champions, was given the Johnny McDaid Memorial Cup.
Donegal’s Irish champions were honoured for their achievements while Sadie Duffy, James McCarron and Peter O’Donnell were presented with awards to mark their involvement with Irish boxing teams in the last year.
St Johnston’s Brett McGinty, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, was a special guest on the night.
Ulster Council President Paul McMahon was also in attendance and praised Donegal’s boxing clubs, reserving a special word of praise for Peter O’Donnell, the Donegal Boxing Board’s President.
“Peter does outstanding work and he never lets us down,” Mr McMahon said. “We are very fortunate to have a man of his calibre on board.”
In the last year, 19 new coaches have been qualified in Donegal.
