A GLENFIN player will create a slice of GAA history next month.
Maggie Farrelly, a native of county Cavan, will referee the Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup game between Fermanagh and St Mary’s at Brewster Park, Enniskillen on January 3rd.
Farrelly, from the Laragh club in Cavan, has been studying in Letterkenny and playing for Glenfin, with whom she won the Donegal as well as rising the ladder of refereeing.
Her name is already the answer to some GAA quiz questions.
Earlier this year, she became the first female to take charge of a men’s inter-county game when she refereed the Ulster Minor Football Championship clash between Fermanagh and Antrim.
In 2014, she was the first female to officiate at a senior men’s game when she was the sideline official for the Allianz League clash of Dublin and Kerry at Croke Park.
Next month, Farrelly will become the first female to referee a senior men’s inter-county game.
She has been a member of the Ulster GAA Referee academy in 2011 and refereed the All-Ireland Ladies’ senior final in 2014, when she was also named as the Ulster Referee of the Year.
