FINN HARPS WILL be unsure whether it was a point gained or two lost in their draw against Athone Town in the midlands this evening.
Athlone Town 1-1 Finn Harps
Probably the latter.
Ollie Horgan’s team trailed to a goal from Shane Stokes in the 55th minute of the contest but had Michael O’Connor to thank for grabbing an equaliser just 13 minutes from time.
But Harps should never have been in such a position against the strugglers at the Athlone Town Stadium. Harps completely dominated the first half with John O’Flynn going close three times, with Ciaran O’Connor and Paddy McCourt also having chances.
But scoreless it was at the break and then, 10 minutes into the second half, Harps found themselves a goal down thanks to a rasper from long range from Stokes.
A measure of the Ballybofey side’s dominance was the fact they won the corner count 13-2 but they will be the first to admit that after the break, they were not as cohesive.
Substitute BJ Banda hit the post and with Lee Toland providing a series of fine crosses, eventually the equaliser came. Toland provided the centre and Michael O’Connor looped a header to the far post over Nathan Murphy in the Athlone goal.
Harps pressed for a winner but Banda and Adam Duffy saw shots blocked on what proved to be a frustrating 90 minutes.
