CLOUGHANEELY MADE THE long trip from the west of the county worthwhile with two points on Sunday on their visit to Malin’s Connolly Park where the home side still remain in a relegation struggle.
Malin 0-10 Cloich Cheann Fhaola 2-13
Malin edged the first half and led at the break by a point but the introduction of Deaglán Mac Gairbheith and the pushing up of Marc Ó hÉarlaigh reaped rewards for the Falcarragh men who were without county man Jason McGee.
Malin open the scoring with a great Declan Walsh point as he stroked across the ball after Joseph Doherty had done well to set him up winning a long ball in. Seamus Doherty doubled the lead shortly after from thirty yards after a great threaded ball from Shaun Kelly.
Ciarán Mac Pháidín replied with an impressive score from way out on the right. Paul McLaughlin then hit a fifty metre free after Declan Walsh was fouled. Séan Mac Uibhir came back with a free and then he scored one from play after a poor kick out routine.
Matthew Byrne and Declan Walsh then hit two excellent scores from distance, both outside the 45. Cloughaneely came back with two scores to level with midfielder Ó Briain scoring from the edge of the D and fullback Padraig Ó Canainn taking a punt from outside the 45’ after they seemed to run out of options against a packed defence.
Paul McLaughlin then hit a free from the ground after Conor Farren was caught high. Halftime score Malin 0-6 Cloich Cheann Fhaola 0-5.
Substitute Deaglán Mac Gairbheith made an immediate impact at the start of the second half with a shot from the 21’. Matthew Byrne hit a good score from distance to reply but the scores were level again shortly after with a Mac Gairbheith free. Shaun Kelly burst through to score in response and although fouled and after a bit of confusion an advantage was given and the point stood.
Kelly awkwardly then managed to turn provider somehow getting the ball to Dan McDaid who plucked it from the sky and he too looked awkward as he drove over and Malin were two ahead. That was as good as it got for Malin as they only managed one more score in the last twenty minutes of the game. Séan Mac Gearailt scored a point and then they got a crucial goal.
The lively Mac Gairbheith’s pointed effort came back of the post and it fell to Aodhán Ó Dubhcháin who blasted in past McLaughlin in the Malin goal. Paul McLaughlin scored another free from the ground after Shaun Kelly was fouled but a great team score right away finished off by Micháel Mac Gearailt got the Gaeltacht side back on the front foot again.
The same played fisted over and then they really put the game to bed when Séan Mac Gearailt punched the ball over the Malin keeper who only got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent it from hitting the back of the net, set up after the rampaging Ó hÉarlaigh hand passed across the square. They tagged on two further scores from Ciarán O Scanláin and Ó hÉarlaigh to leave the fulltime score Malin 0-10 Cloich Cheann Fhaola 2-13.
