INISHOWEN LEAGUE manager Diarmuid O’Brien asked his team to play at a higher tempo in the second half last night – and the result was a 7-3 win over Monaghan-Cavan.
Inishowen were 2-1 down at half-time, having been a goal behind after only 20 seconds.
Goals by Matthew Henry, Anthony Doherty (2), Brendan Fildara (2), Michael Barr and Nigel McMonagle secured a high-scoring win for the Inishowen men, winners of this competition two seasons ago.
[adrotate group=”46″]“It reflects what we asked them to do at half-time – to play to a higher tempo,” O’Brien told Donegal Sport Hub.
“That found Monaghan-Cavan out and led to the creation of the goals.
“We told a few home truths at half-time and we felt that when we got the ball down and moved it well we could cause trouble – and it paid rich dividends.
[adrotate group=”81″]“We have been around this team a long team. A lot of these boys, I’ve coached with them since schoolboys. Nothing much changes. You give them the odd gee up when they need it. “
Inishowen were without the injured Matthew Byrne, Kieran McDaid and Bob Buchannan last night, but the win now means that the peninsula men are into the last eight – and O’Brien is aiming for another lasting run.
He said: “It’s probably the strongest team we’ve had in the five years. The overall balance is probably stronger.
[adrotate group=”53″]“It gives us a good chance to fine-tune our preparations. We’ll play Harps here in a friendly and we’ll probably get a game with Derry too. They’ll be high tempo games and they’ll held our development.”
