RICHARD TINNEY has revealed the YouTube inspiration behind Raphoe’s winning goal in yesterday’s Irish Hockey Trophy tie against Cork Church of Ireland.
The Raphoe ladies scored a dramatic, but deserved 3-2 win at the Royal and Prior.
After going 2-0 up through Wendy Bustard and Leanne Patterson, Raphoe allowed the visitors back into the game as Christina Dring and Steffi Bowe netted to draw level.
However, eight minutes from the end, Raphoe struck gold as, from her own short corner, the ball was worked back to Victoria Wray, who made no mistake with a brilliant finish to fire Raphoe into the quarter-finals.
“I saw it on YouTube, this short corner, and I thought it was something we could use,” Tinney told Donegal Sport Hub.
“We did it a couple of times in training. We tried it in the first half and it didn’t come off. It was a phenominal goal and a superb finish. She’s done that all her life, the first-time finish to the bottom corner.
“It was an unbelievable victory. We worked hard, although we gifted them a way back into the game with silly passes, but in saying that they put a serious effort in over Christmas when we had nine training sessions.
“They’ve all put the effort in and it paid off.”
Raphoe were under the cosh for periods when Cork Church of Ireland were camped in their half, but the home side clung on and Tinney said: “Our defence has been phenominal, Denise McElhinney and Victoria Wray are unbelievable at the moment. The whole team is fighting hard.”
