THE ULSTER Elite Championships have been put on hold until the autumn, when they are expected to act as part of the selection process for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Traditionally, the Ulster Elite Championships were held at the beginning of the year, but the stardust and the magic of the once-glorious Championships has waned lately.
With the National Elite Championships to begin next month and run over three weekends in Dublin and, with the Irish Under-22 Championships to start this month, the Ulster Boxing Council have been forced to postpone the provincial series.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held in Australia and an Ulster Senior Championship run off later this year could be used to select the Northern Ireland squad for that trip.
St Johnston’s Brett McGinty, an eight-time Irish champion with Derry’s Oakleaf ABC and a Commonwealth Youth Games silver medal winner last year, would be among the Donegal punchers bidding for provincial glory.
[adrotate group=”76″]Welterweight McGinty has confirmed that he will enter the National Elite Championships next month; the first time the Deele College student will box at senior championship level.
Twin Towns flytweight Donna Barr is also hoping to compete in the National Elites having returned to training following a recent injury.
