A SHARPER Patrician High School had a little too much firepower for St Eunan’s College in today’s Ulster Colleges Loch an Luir final.
St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny 1-5 Patriciain High School, Carrickmacross 0-12
At windy Garvaghey, Gary McDaid’s St Eunan’s just didn’t live up to their own expectations and fell to a first defeat of the season at the final hurdle.
Forward Shane Monaghan bagged a first-half goal for St Eunan’s, but Patrician pulled clear in the second half for the win.
[adrotate group=”88″]Gerard Finegan and Liam McDonald got Patrician off and running, but Eunan’s responded through a Callum Friel brace to draw level.
In between times, Eunan’s goalkeeper Killian Gribben made a brilliant save to deny Finnegan a goal after he broke through.
It had been a low-scoring first-half with Diarmuid Marren’s score making it 0-3 to 0-2 after 25 minutes.
[adrotate group=”76″]Two minutes before half-time, Eunan’s bagged a precious goal when Monaghan drilled home after Noel O’Donnell’s ball in was knocked down by Jack Roarty. Monaghan, a nephew of former Donegal star Brendan Devenney, made no mistake to put St Eunan’s ahead.
However, McDonald fired over twice before the interval to make it level-pegging, 1-2 to 0-5, at the changeover.
A minute into the second half, Monaghan might have had another goal, but the Naomh Colmcille man – after taking a pass from Keelan Collier – saw his effort saved by Darragh Maher when the St Eunan’s forward could, and should have netted.
[adrotate group=”46″]Roarty fired over a brilliant score from 40 metres to put Eunan’s in front, but Carrickmacross soon had real command with McDonald, Daire Povall and McDonald again on the mark.
Monaghan was denied again by Magher and the margin stood at four points when McDonald and Jack McMenamin slotted over quick-fire scores.
Friel’s free, his third of the day, gave St Eunan’s hope, but Patrician saw out a deserved win with Povall and Callum Quigley registering.
