COCKHILL CELTIC manager and former Finn Harps goalkeeper Gavin Cullen has backed Harry Doherty to become a ‘top ‘keeper’ in the League of Ireland.
Harps last night confirmed the signing of the 20-year-old goalkeeper from Ulster Senior League table-toppers Cockhill.
With Richard Brush looking set for a move to Irish League side Ballinamallard, Doherty will join Ciaran Gallagher in the battle for the number 1 shirt at Finn Park in 2017.
Buncrana native Doherty played for Cockhill in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Finn Harps Reserves at Finn Park.
“He’s got all the attributes and ability to become a top ‘keeper in the League of Ireland,” Cullen told Donegal Sport Hub.
“I see this as a great opportunity for him and hopefully when Ollie gives him his chance he grabs it with both hands.
“I’d like to wish Harry all the best from myself and everyone at the club.
“I’ve known and worked with Harry since he was 12. He’s got a fantastic attitude and a real desire to do well for himself ,
“Finn Harps now have both Harry and Lee McCarron from Cockhill and both young keepers have massive potential.
“I’m delighted that they are at Harps. It’s great to see young players from Inishowen going to senior clubs and the clubs should all be encouraging the young players to play at the highest level possible.
“I wish Harry and Harps all the best for the new season.”
Doherty has played for the Republic of Ireland at Under-17 and Under-19 level and has been on the books of Charlton Athletic and Brighton & Hove Albion.
