DONEGAL’S INVOLVEMENT at the FZ Forza Irish Open ended yesterday with defeat for Sam and Joshua Magee in the quarter-finals.
The Raphoe brothers were beaten by Russian pair Konstantin Abramov and Alexandr Zinchenko at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in the last eight of the men’s doubles.
The Magees started well and won the opening set 21-19, but the Russians hit back to win the next two – 21-16, 21-15 – and the match.
The Raphoe duo won their first two matches in the competition to carry the Irish flag into yesterday’s quarter-finals.
A 21-17, 21-17 win against Chinese Taipei’s Yu Jen Chi and Kuo Ching-Hung was followed by an impressive 21-14, 21-18 victory over Denmark’s Frederik Aalestrup and Mathias Moldt Baskjaer.
