SHANE BYRNE praised his LyIT side for their ‘best display of the year’ so far following their hammering of Athlone IT yesterday.
McVeigh’s treble and goals by Daire McDaid and Dean Larkin shot LyIT into the quarter-finals of the CFAI Umbrio Cup.
“That’s as well as we’ve played all year,” Byrne told Donegal Sport Hub.
“We played really, really well. We were the better side even when they had the full compliment of players.
[adrotate group=”88″]“At one-nil, they did hit us on the counter but, after a great save from Mark (McElhinney), we got the second.”
Athlone finished with nine men after Emileaono Quintama and Jason Lyons were sent off and LyIT scored three after the visitors were hit with the red cards.
Byrne said: “Discipline cost them big time, but we’d have won the game anyway.
“The sendings off had an impact on the scoreline, but not the outcome.
“The team performance was very good. The whole team played well and it’s definitely our best display of the year.
“Athlone are a division above us and they had aspirations of winning this cup. To beat a side like that is real confidence building for the players.”
