PETER DOHERTY, the Donegal League assistant manager, has urged clubs within the League to give their players a ‘push’ and back the Oscar Traynor team.
Their involvement in this season’s Oscar Traynor Cup will not go beyond their final group game, against Sligo-Leitrim in early January, after they suffered an agonising defeat to Inishowen at Maginn Park on Saturday night.
Donegal were hit by some withdrawals prior to Saturday’s game and Doherty expressed the frustration of the management team. Brian Dorrian heads the management with Doherty, Tommy McFadden and Mark Curran his assistants.
Doherty confirmed that they will seek another term in the role.
“The quality is there, but we do need some clubs to give their players a wee push,” Doherty told Donegal Sport Hub.
“It’s not the lack of talent, but maybe a lack of a push to get them there.
“All we asked was for pride in the League. The team hadn’t had pride in years, but the performance showed the quality that’s in the League and the pride they have.
“We want players who want to play for the Donegal League. If these 19 pull out, we’ll take another 19 in.”
A team that showed six changes from the opening defeat to Monaghan-Cavan performed well on Saturday night. Ciaran McGeady levelled following Terence Doherty’s opener but, for the third year in a row, Inishowen sneaked a late winner.
“Horrible…Hard to take,” was how Milford clubman Doherty described it.
“You couldn’t script it, three years in a row and last minute goals. What makes it more sickening is that we dominated the game.
“It’s gut-wrenching. They definitely have a voodoo sign over us. No-one knows what to say. We’re patting ourselves for pride, but that won’t get us out of the group.”
