IT’S TEN seasons since a 17-year-old Jonny McGinty played for Kildrum Tigers in an Intermediate Cup semi-final – now the St Johnston man is dreaming of another big Cup run.
McGinty was part of a Kildrum side that reached the semi-final of the Intermediate Cup in the 2006/07 campaign, when they lost 1-0 to Avondale United.
On Sunday, Kildrum welcome Erne Wanderers to Station Road Park with the winners facing an away trip to Abbeyfeale United in Limerick next weekend.

It’s a game that has McGinty itching for another Cup sojourn with the Foyleside outfit, who went joint top of the Premier Division thanks to a 3-2 win at Convoy on Sunday.
[adrotate group=”88″]“We want a good run in this Cup and we think that we have the squad to go far in it,” McGinty says.
“It’s been a good season so far. A few things have come together. Last year, we played in bits and pieces, but we’ve been a lot better this season.
“Things are going in the right direction and we’ve some good young players coming through.
[adrotate group=”80″]“It was a big decision to step down. We didn’t have too many local men in the team so we stepped down. We took the Donegal League a bit too lightly and it took us a while to get going.”
McGinty and Brian Coll are the survivors from Kildrum’s class of 2007, although Shane Brown, the manager, could have the experience of Glenn Bovaird again with the veteran midfielder said to be making a return to the Tigers fold.
Looking back at ’07, McGinty says: “It’s hard to believe it’s so long ago. It seems like it’s only a couple of years ago.
[adrotate group=”46″]“That year was unreal. We had some good players. Avondale put us out in a semi-final. On our day we could have won it. Ten years ago I didn’t think it would be long before we’d get a run again.”
Now, though, they’re dreaming of a lasting run in national competition again.
