RONAN MCKINLEY made his first start for the Republic of Ireland Under-15 side today and was heavily involved although his team lost 2-1 to Poland.
The Irish side, under manager Jason Donohue, played two games against Poland in Lomza this week and Bonagee United midfielder McKinley – pictured extreme right, back row – played a part in both games.
After coming on as a sub for Seamus Keogh in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw, the Newtowncunningham native, a student at Deele College in Raphoe, started today.
McKinley set up the opening goal of the game as Conor Carty headed home his corner kick after just ten minutes.
Poland drew level in the 45th minute when Filip Szymczak fired home from the penalty spot after Keogh was penalised for a challenge.
Szymczak put the home side ahead in the 52nd minute when he headed to the net following a Polish corner.
McKinley came close to an equaliser for Ireland, but his free kick was turned around the post by the Polish goalkeeper.
“We were really happy with the players,” Donohue said.
“They showed great improvement from Tuesday and were very confident in possession.
“ They showed no nerves and had Poland on the back foot for the majority of the game. The Polish coach was very complimentary about our performance afterwards.”
