DONEGAL BOXERS are ready for action in the National Senior Championships in Dublin, which get underway tonight.
There are no Donegal punchers involved tonight, but four will be on the canvas tomorrow and another is in semi-final action next weekend.
The National Senior Championships were formerly the National Intermediate Championships.
Raphoe welterweight Orin McDermott (pictured) is a two-time Irish champion from his days at Finn Valley ABC and faces St Teresa’s James Cahill tomorrow in a preliminary contest at 69kgs.
[adrotate group=”38″]McDermott was in Philadelphia last weekend with a North-West Select and overcame Dante Cobb on a unanimous decision.
Two years ago, Twin Towns’ Paul Kelly lost to Ryan Dervan of Loughrea in the middleweight final at these Championships. Kelly is back at The National Stadium again this weekend and tomorrow faces Ballinacarrow’s Niall McDermott.
Last weekend, Illies Golden Gloves boxers Martin Lynch, Garbhan Friel and Davit Tsotsoria won Ulster Intermediate titles – and all three have entered the National Seniors.
Tsotsoria meets Marcin Skalski next weekend in a semi-final at 91kgs, but Lynch and Friel are in action tomorrow.
Lynch is against Conal Deery from Carrickmore at middleweight and Friel is up against Shane O’Brien (Corpus Christi) in a heavyweight bout.
