A DONEGAL GAA club is going ‘Smoke Free’ – and will launch its new initiative on Saturday.
St Mary’s, Convoy are the first in Ulster and only the second club in Ireland, following St John’s Volunteers in Wexford, to go ‘Smoke Free’.
The initiative is backed by the GAA, by quit.ie and the HSE, all of whom will be represented at Saturday morning’s launch at Pairc Naomh Mhuire.
St Mary’s is one of 60 clubs in Ireland participating in the second phase of the healthy clubs initiative which is run by the GAA.
“Earlier this year, the executive passed the motion to become a Smoke Free Club when the proposal was brought to them by the Healthy Club Project Team,” a club statement from St Mary’s, Convoy, read.
“This is a great inititative that promotes healthy lifestyle, but also hopes to discourage our younger players and members from taking up the habit of smoking, which we know has major health implications.”
Donegal County Board Chairman Sean Dunnion, National Healthy Club Co-Ordinator Aoife O’Brien and local inter-county players will be among those at this weekend’s launch.
