TOMMY MCFADDEN felt that the Donegal League were the masters of their own downfall in yesterday’s defeat to Monaghan-Cavan League at The Moss.
Semi-finalists last season, the Donegal League face a big task to make it out of the group in this year’s Oscar Traynor Trophy with away fixtures to Inishowen and Sligo-Leitrim to come.
“It was very disappointing,” assistant manager McFadden, in place of manager Brian Dorrian, who elected not to speak to the media, said afterwards.
“After the good run last year, we approached it well this year.
“It was a very poor first half and that cost us on the day. They sort of froze on the day. We didn’t get to grips with our passing game.
They caught us cold. They were sharper and hungrier on the day. Brian read the riot act and made three changes. We came out re-engergised and got the early goal, but they sat in deep and we couldn’t get the second goal.
[adrotate group=”85″]“If we had got to two-all we’d have won the game, I feel. Monaghan-Cavan used to be the whipping boys here, but they’re whipping boys no more.”
The manner of the goals in an insipid first-half display was something the management lamented.
McFadden said: “We were the architects of our own trouble. That’s the bottom line.
“We’re not that down about it, but we have two big games left. The boys know themselves that they have to lift it. It’s all to play for.”
