ILLIES GOLDEN GLOVES were celebrating a hat-trick of wins at the Ulster Senior Championships in Belfast last night.
The Buncrana club saw middleweight Martin Lynch, light-heavyweight Garbhan Friel and heavyweight Davit Tsotsoria claim titles at the finals, held in the Dockworkers Club in Belfast.
For all three punchers, it was history in the making as the wins were their first Ulster Senior final victories.
Lynch overcame Christopher McClean from the Two Castles club in Tyrone in the middleweight decider.
Lynch took the win on a unanimous decision and also left with the Boxer of the Tournament award.
Lynch defeated Finbarr Kelly (North Down) on Tuesday in a quarter-final before he stopped Cookstown’s Ryan Cleary on Wednesday night in the semi-final. And his superb form continued into last night’s final, where he had the measure of McClean.
The light-heavyweight decider was unique in that it was an all-Illies affair. Friel, who was an Ulster Intermediate champion in January, took the win as he continued his good form of late with a 3-0 win over Browne.
Tsotsoria completed the hat-trick for Illies as he defeated Letterkenny ABC’s Michael McConigley 3-0 in the heavyweight final. The pair were once colleagues at Letterkenny ABC but it was Tsotsoria, now in the Illies colours, who took the win.
