Fanad United Youths suffered their first defeat of the season as Letterkenny Rovers Youths progressed to the next round of the FAI Youth Cup in a scrappy game at Traigh-a-Loch on Saturday afternoon.

The opening half hour of the game produced little in the way of chances with a Brad Patterson cross shot which went just over in the 15th minute the only chance of note.

The game came to life on the half hour with Letterkenny having three chances in the space of five minutes. After some good work the ball fell to Daire Crossan 15 yards out but his shot was well saved by Dane Dunworth in the Fanad goal.

Four minutes later Eoghan Kelly got into an advanced position and seen his shot saved. A minute later Dunworth made his best save of the game. After a good move, Jerome Angel-Atuahene burst forward only to see his shot brilliantly tipped around the post by Dunworth.
Fanad had to wait until five minutes before the break for their first clear chance. When Gerard McAteer swung in a free from the left, Bernard McGettigan rose highest in the box but his header went just over the bar.
[adrotate group=”85″]The second half started in a similar way to the first with chances at a premium. Five minutes in some good work by Michael Devine sent Brad Patterson away but his shot was well saved by Eoin O’Boyle.
Letterkenny introduced Shane Doherty off the bench on the hour and he almost made an immediate impact when his well struck free kick was deflected just wide.
Fifteen minutes from time Brad Patterson seen another good effort well saved by O’Boyle. Fanad started to put on some pressure in the last 10 minutes but found O’Boyle impossible to get past and with six minutes remaining he produced an outstanding save.
[adrotate group=”80″]After some great work between Gerard McAteer and Brad Patterson the ball was crossed into Louis Hanlon eight yards out but his first time shot was brilliantly saved. As the game looked to be heading for extra time, Rovers got the winner with three minutes remaining. When a corner from the right broke to the edge of the box, Shane Doherty’s well hit shot found the bottom corner.
Best for Fanad were Bernard McGettigan, Brad Patterson and Dane Dunworth. Best for Letterkenny were Eoin O’Boyle, Corey Brogan and Shane Doherty.
