BALLYBOFEY’S Avril McNamee is heading off to California to take part in the Simple Green US Open of Handball this week.
The Sean MacCumhaills woman is one of the leading handballers in Ireland and is itching to get started in the tournament, which gets underway on Thursday at Fountain Valley.
McNamee won titles in the Ulster One Wall Tournament and in the Irish One Wall Championships having competed at the 2015 World Championships in Canada.
This week’s tournament will be her first big 40×20 tournament since her return from Calgary last August.
“I am feeling really good about it,” McNamee told Donegal Sport Hub before her flight this afternoon.
“My preparation has gone really well. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m in a very positive frame of mind at the minute. I’m in good shape and I’m playing well so hopefully I’ll have a good tournament.”
McNamee paid tribute to her coach, Paddy Murray, and to Tommy Gallagher Injury Management for their assistance in her preparation for the trip.
At last year’s World Championships, McNamee reached the semi-finals of both the Women’s A and B singles.
