THE DONEGAL County Board has lodged a request with the Ulster Council to have the Ulster Intermediate Championship game involving Milford or Burt put back a week.
Following yesterday’s dramatic draw at O’Donnell Park, Milford and Burt will have to go again in a replay that has been scheduled for this Saturday evening, again at O’Donnell Park.
The replay has been fixed (4.30pm) just 22 hours before the winner is pencilled in to play Down champions Bredagh in the Ulster IFC – also at O’Donnell Park.
The replay has been fixed for Saturday as it was the earliest that Burt could play, given that two of their squad – Ronan McDermott and Christopher McDermott – work in England.
There had been calls for yesterday’s game to go to extra-time, but the match regulations in Donegal do not permit extra time to be played.
While both managers, Danny O’Donnell of Milford and Ronan McLaughlin from Burt, weren’t thinking about Ulster.
“Ulster is just a bonus,” shrugged McLaughlin, while O’Donnell said he wasn’t ‘looking anywhere near Ulster’.
Today, the Donegal County Board submitted a request to the Ulster CCC calling for the provincial game to be postponed for a week, keen to avoid of the scenario Cloughaneely faced in 2014.
Then, Cloughaneely overcame Buncrana in the Donegal IFC final, played on a Saturday, and a day later defeated Castledawson in the Ulster IFC, in a game that went to extra-time.
