FANAD UNITED maintained their 100 per cent start to the Donegal Youth League season when they overcame league leaders Keadue Rovers at Traigh-a-Loch on Saturday.
Fanad United Youths 3 Keadue Rovers Youths 1
Both teams went into the game with 100% records with Keadue winning their opening four games and Fanad winning their opening 3 games.
The opening exchanges in the match were pretty even with neither side creating any clear cut chances. Five minutes into the game the ball broke to Ultan Boyle who’s snap shot from outside the box flew just wide of the Fanad goal.
[adrotate group=”85″]Ten minutes later a deep free from Peter Curran found Brad Patterson unmarked in the Keadue box but his header went wide. Fanad took the lead in the 20th minute and it was pretty much route one.
When Dane Dunworth held a free kick, his first time ball up field found in form Michael Devine who was able to hold off the attentions of Danny McGlynn before supplying a deft finish into the bottom corner.
The game was end to end after this and on 25 minutes Fanad had Darren McElwaine to thank when he made an excellent tackle on Ultan Boyle to deny what was a clear chance on goal.
Fanad doubled their lead in the 33rd minute and this time Devine was the provider.
When Sean Little won possession in mid-field he surged forward and played to ball to Devine who then played an inch perfect pass back to Little who finished beyond Conor O’Donnell
Keadue came out the stronger in the second half and put Fanad under great pressure from the off.
[adrotate group=”83″]Just a minute into the half, Ultan Boyle powered in a shot that Dane Dunworth did very well to save. Keadue got their reward for their pressure just before the hour when Ultan Boyle pulled a goal back.
It was a virtual carbon copy of the first goal of the day when Conor O’Donnell’s ball forward was met by Boyle who held off Peter Curran before finishing into the far corner.
Just a minute later Keadue should really have equalised. When Calum Boyle’s free form the right was met by an Jordan Doogan his header went over when he should have scored.
The next 20 minutes were even enough with half chances falling to Michael Devine and Gerard McAteer for Fanad with Jordan Doogan and Aiden McHugh having chances for Keadue.
Six minutes from time Fanad got the insurance goal. After pressure from Brad Patterson the ball broke to Ciaran Coyle and he finished beyond the onrushing O’Donnell.
