BRIAN BROGAN and Damien McGettigan won the national rally at the Cork 20 International Rally this weekend.
Brogan and McGettigan claimed their second win in Cork in 2016 having took victory in the West Cork Rally earlier in the year.
By the time the Letterkenny crew crossed the finish of the 14 stages in Cork today, the Mk2 Escort was 1 minute and 37.2 seconds ahead of Tommy Doyle and Liam Moynihan in the Clio.
Their weekend didn’t get off to the smoothest of starts on Saturday with the Donegal duo complaining of a lack of grip and they had a bad spin at a junction on stage three.
[adrotate group=”85″]Also on Saturday, they had to replace the crown wheel and the pinion of the Escort.
However, they soon roared to the front of the field in the national category and set some rip-roaring times through the latter part of Saturday and throughout Sunday’s stages for a memorable win.
Donegal’s Martin Doherty and Raymond Scott finished in fourth position in the national category and took the class 14 honours and Donegal navigator Leon Jordan called the notes for the fifth-placed Barry McKenna.
[adrotate group=”38″]The Escort of Liam McIntyre and Darren Curran was 23rd overall. Donegal town’s McIntyre changed from the navigator’s seat to the driver’s berth this weekend and with Redcastle’s Curran on the notes they had a fine 23rd place finish in preparation for next weekend’s Martin Howley Memorial Bayview Hotel Harvest Stages Rally.
The Cork 20 International Rally was won by Josh Moffett, who had just 4.6 seconds to spare on his brother Sam Moffett and it was the first time in 20 years that a WRC car didn’t win the event, Moffett winning in an R5 Fiesta.
Marty Gallagher and Dean O’Sullivan were flying in their 208, but late drama saw them lose a lot of time in the final loop and the class 2 win went, instead, to Callum Devine and Keith Moriatty in the Opel Adam.
