GAVIN CULLEN isn’t thinking too far ahead, but admits that he craves a run in the Intermediate Cup with Cockhill Celtic.
Sunday’s 1-0 win over Letterkenny Rovers at Leckview Park saw the Inishowen men get one over on last season’s finalists and fuel a belief in their own camp of a lasting run in the competition.
Player-manager Cullen, though, is mindful of recent sojourns that have ended in disappointment.
In Donal O’Brien’s time as manager, Cockhill defeated Crumlin United and were set to go long into the spring only for St Mochta’s to stop them in their tracks while Letterkenny defeated them in last season’s opening round.
[adrotate group=”38″]“We’re into the next round and we have another game to get out of Ulster,” Cullen cautioned after Sunday’s win.
“You just take it one game at a time in Cup competitions. We’re happy to get into the next round and hopefully get a run.
“There is no doubt that Letterkenny getting to the final last year showed that the quality and the players are up here.
[adrotate group=”37″]“Probably the League here doesn’t get the credit it deserves – you just have to look at the players who weren’t on the pitch here to see that.”
Derek Doherty’s sixth-minute goal gave Cockhill a slender win and Cullen had to be on guard to make several big saves for a clean sheet.
He said: “Normally I don’t have as much to do. I made the saves, gladly.
[adrotate group=”70″]“It was a tight battle in tough conditions. Both teams left everything on the pitch. It was a one-nil win to enjoy the way it panned out.
“There were loads of chances in the game. If we had been more clinical we might have put it to bed earlier. Letterkenny did very well too and they had chances too.”
These teams meet again this weekend at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds in the Ulster Senior League.
