ALAN MATTHEWS isn’t making any bold predictions for Longford Town, but says they must build on last night’s win over Finn Harps.
With six games remaining, Longford trail Harps by ten points, although now have only six points to make up to second-from-bottom Wexford Youths with the relegation battle really tightening up after a 1-0 win for Longford at Finn Park.
“This win in isolation now is no good to us,” Matthews, who recently took over from Tony Cousins, told Donegal Sport Hub.
[adrotate group=”38″]“We need to build on it. We must build on it and try to get three points next week.
We will just look to next week. We’ll look to get three points. We’re not trying to bridge any gap. We’re just looking to the next game and maybe the team above us.”
O’Connor’s goal, a wonderful finish after he latched onto Packie Mailey’s clearance, was certainly worthy to win it and secure a precious three points for the Midlanders.
[adrotate group=”50″]Matthews said: “It’s great. It was a big ask to come up here and get three points. Our performance was very good and we dug deep.
“As soon as Kevin hit it, it looked like going in and it did. We had a couple of good chances to seal the game. A second goal would have given us a better level of confidence.
“We stood up to the task and defended heroically at times. The second goal didn’t come for us, but this is a very valuable three points. Ryan gave us a lift with the penalty save and this is a good result for us and a good night’s work.”
