EAMON MCCONIGLEY delivered a sharp sideswipe at Donegal’s soccer administrators in the aftermath of Letterkenny Rovers’ win over Derry City Reserves yesterday.
“Football in Donegal needs to be overhauled,” the Rovers manager told Donegal Sport Hub, noting that Harps’ return is ‘plastering over the cracks’.
[adrotate group=”37″]“There is no-one making any effort. All we can do is keep going and keep playing.
“Unfortunately at the moment, the people in charge of football aren’t progressive enough and they don’t see what we should be doing to improve football standards.”
It was McConigley who, while Chairman of the USL, gave his casting vote to a switch to summer football in 2007. That decision has since been reversed and the League is now back in the winter term again.
[adrotate group=”38″]Overall, McConigley says he fears for the standard of the game.
“At the moment, the worst player in the League is dictating how the game should be played,” he said.
“Managers are sitting waiting on them to come into a dressing room at quarter-to-two and the player doesn’t care if he plays or not. Those players have outnumbered the good, genuine players who want to play.
[adrotate group=”46″]“It’s up to the people in charge of football, but I don’t know if they’re interested in the standards of football.
“Anyone can run a League, but if you don’t have standard and commitment, you don’t have any standard of football.
“Where does the good young fell who wants to play go to promote himself. That has to be provided to him and thankfully, at the moment, the Ulster Senior League is doing that.”
