CULDAFF MANAGER DEREK DOHERTY could have been forgiven for watching Sunday’s derby defeat to Glengad through his fingers – but the Caratra Park boss has backed his side to bounce back.
Doherty endured one of his most difficult days at the venue on Sunday as Glengad romped to a 9-1 derby win that left Doherty and his squad shell-shocked.
The writing was on the wall from early in the day when it became apparent that he would have to field a depleted team.
With Paul Fildara, Brendan Fildara, Darragh McLaughlin, Darren McLarkey and Conor Farren on GAA duty with Malin, it was to be a painful afternoon for those attired in Culdaff’s red and white.
“We were missing a couple of very good players,” Doherty sighed afterwards.
“We thought we would have had them, but they opted to go to the Gaelic. That was their choice and there’s not much that we can do about it.
“It’s always tough to play one of the best teams in the League. Even if we had a full team out it would be tough, but with a handful of men out it was extra tough.
“It’s a tough day. We had a lot of men missing and a lot of young lads coming.”
Paddy McDermott opened the scoring for Glengad in the first minute and while a goal from Dillon Roddy gave Culdaff hope, after John McDaid had doubled the lead, Glengad moved through the gears.
Doherty said: “We weren’t picking them up in the first half. We fell behind to a soft goal and it was an uphill battle from then on.”

Doherty said: “They work hard every day and we have a game now on Wednesday so hopefully we can get boys in to steady the ship again.”
