EAMON MCAULEY gathered the Sean MacCumhaills hurlers last Christmas to get the show on the road again – today, they shone on the big stage.
After losing the last two Donegal SHC finals against Burt, MacCumhaills hit the dizzying heights again today as goals by David White and Aaron McAuley, not to mention ten points from inspirational skipper Lee Henderson, secured the Munster Cup.
“To get a result today was unreal,” McAuley told Donegal Sport Hub after the 2-13 to 2-9 win.
“We started the day after Christmas Day. We set down the law and got back at it.
“The difference this year what that we turned around a few good forwards into defenders and vice-versa. Take Ciaran Matthewson, he’s a good forward for the county, but I thought we’d get more out of him in the backs and more out of Lee and Paddy in the middle of the park.”
[adrotate group=”37″]After beating their neighbours Setanta in a semi-final, MacCumhaills defeated the aristocrats, Burt, in the final, to complete a perfect Championship with seven wins out of seven.
McAuley said” “It’s unbelievable to beat these teams, but we’re putting in a lot of work. St Eunan’s and Buncrana are coming up and it’s going to be tight in a few years’ time.
[adrotate group=”76″]“For years, we used to put out a hurling team and just have a batter about, but they’re putting in the effort now.”
MacCumhaills led 1-7 to 1-5 at half-time as Conor Harkin’s goal gave Burt hope, but the Twin Towns men didn’t slip in the second half.
McAuley said: “We always knew that we had the team for the second half. Burt will lift themselves, but we said to the boys not to get frustrated and to keep the heads and keep playing hurling. Thanks be to God it came good for us.”
