BRETT MCGINTY SAYS this year’s World Youth Championships in Russia can be a ‘platform’ for Irish boxing’s next generation.
The St Johnston man unleashed a flurry of ferocious body shots that rocked the Dubliner to such an extent their bout was stopped in the third round.
Now, McGinty is heading for St Petersburg in November for what will be his first taste of World Championship action.
[adrotate group=”38″]“This is where I want to be and this was the main goal,” McGinty told Donegal Sport Hub.
“This is a great opportunity for us. It’s a platform for us to put our names out there. If we can get a few medals, it’s exactly what we need to be considered as the hopefuls for Tokyo in 2020.”
McGinty was a European Schoolboy bronze medal winner in 2012 and last year was a silver medalist at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.
[adrotate group=”37″]The Worlds were something he’s had as a goal for some time now.
He said “From the start of the season, we knew we had a lot coming up. From day one and from the first training session, the aim was the World Championships.
“Winning the Under-18s earlier in the year was great, but knowing that this was down the line and that one title wasn’t going to do it for you was always in the back of the mind.
“It’s everything I worked for.”
[adrotate group=”46″]Since losing out in the Commonwealth Youth Games final to England’s Mohammed Harris Akbar last September, McGinty has won 13 out of 14 fights, the only blemish his loss to Gurgen Madoyan at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia.
McGinty said: “It’s been my best year in boxing. Hopefully I can keep the strong form and hopefully give my best ever performance at international competition and get a world medal.”
