COMPETITORS AND SPECTATORS who attended the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Ballyshannon two weeks ago are being asked to be vigilant for signs of Lyme disease.
It follows confirmation that two juvenile rowers from Killarney, who were competitors in the Championships, have been diagnosed with early stage Lyme disease.
The two are members of Workmen’s Rowing Club and a text message was last night circulated among club members urging those who attended the Championships to be alert for signs of a circular, red rash on their body or limbs.
“Two of our juvenile rowers have been diagnosed with Stage I Lyme disease,” the text read, as reported by Killarney Today.
“This early stage is effectively treatable with antibiotics as prescribed by your GP.”
While there is no confirmation that the Championships in Ballyshannon was where the disease was contracted, the two juveniles from Killarney both attended and noticed the symptoms at the same time.
Donegal Bay Rowing Club issued a statement on its Facebook page, which read: “We would ask all clubs to inform their members, parents and supporters of this development…Take the necessary precautions and be vigilant over the coming days. We would like to take the opportunity to wish the two juvenile rowers from Workmens a speedy recovery.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by tick bites.
