GLENREE UNITED won the Arena 7 Shield in emphatic style this evening as Cathal McGinley’s team defeated Finn Valley at Swilly Park.

Denise Doherty scored four in the first half as Glenree roared into a 7-1 lead at the break and, by that stage, it was game, set and match.
Julie Trearty scored twice, while Brenda Sweeney, Noelle McMenamin and an own goal by Lisa McCafferty – who scored Finn Valley’s goal from the penalty spot – sealed a comfortable win.
Glenree got off to a flying start when Denise Doherty fired home from close range into the bottom corner.
[adrotate group=”37″]After Doherty had a shot well blocked, Glenree hit two goals inside a minute.
First, Trearty’s corner caused panic in the Finn Valley box and Doherty set up Brenda Sweeney to double the lead.
Doherty got her second and Glenree’s third in the 11th minute, steering past Caitlin O’Loughlin from a Noelle McMenamin cross.
[adrotate group=”38″]Danielle Doherty was a lick of paint away from a fourth for Glenree, but a cracking effort from distance cannoned off the crossbar.
It was four, though, when Trearty picked up the pieces after Doherty was denied by O’Loughlin and picked her spot in the far corner.
After Danielle Doherty’s free deflected in off the unfortunate McCafferty, Denise Doherty secured her hat-trick, finishing at the second attempt having initially been denied by O’Loughlin.
[adrotate group=”46″]A fine solo run led to Denise Doherty’s fourth, but Finn Valley did pull a goal back when McCafferty drilled home a penalty.
Seven minutes into the second half, Trearty bagged her second of the evening from the edge of the box after O’Loughlin’s clearance fell into her path.
[adrotate group=”70″]The big win was completed when Thea Duffy fed McMenamin, who slotted in and Glenree could finally toast glory after coming agonisingly close in the past.
