ST PATRICK’S PARK in Drumkeen was a hive of activity this morning as the Donegal Women’s League Under-14 finals took place, with success for Swilly Rovers, Lagan Harps, Illistrin and Bonagee United.
Terry Leyden Cup
Glenree United 1-2 Swilly Rovers
AFTER seven minutes Swilly (pictured above) took the lead when Danielle Hynds scored direct from the corner.
Orla Connolly could have extended their lead on 16 minutes, however her shot was just wide of the post.
On 22 minutes Kerry Sweeney set Aobha Gallagher clear however Aisling Irwin made a great tackle. Lauren McBride for Glenree could have equalised on 25 minutes only for a excellent save by Alannah McFadden.
With two minutes to go to half time Caoimhna Herron wiggled through the Swilly defence and slotted ball into the net.
Swilly came out more focused in second half and were rewarded for their efforts when the hard working Molly Diver shot from 20 yards with the Glenree keeper getting a hand to shot but couldn’t stop it from going into the net.
Glenree pressed forward but the spirited Swilly squad kept the structure to run out winners of the Terry Leyden Cup
Paddy McBride Shield
Lagan Harps 0-0 Kilmacrennan Celtic. Lagan win 4-3 on pens
A VERY entertaining game with both defences standing strong.
Lagan had the better of the exchanges early on with shots by Rihanna Devenney and Holly Canning be blocked.
Kilmacrennan settled more into the game and Ciara McGarvey on 15 minutes shot well saved by Neve Scanlon. Neve was called upon again on 18 minutes when Sinead McBride broke through the Lagan defence.
In the second half Erin Doherty for Lagan shot wide before Ciara McElwaine send Ciara McGarvey off on a run with one on one with Scanlon, who pulled off another great save.
[adrotate group=”38″]Casey Barret and Lucy Canning for Lagan push forward in wide positions however their crossed were cleared by Amy McLaughlin.
Nothing could separate the two team in extra time and Scanlon saved two of the penalties to win the shield for Lagan.
Arena 7 Plate,
Finn Valley 0-0 Illistrin, Illistrin win 4-3 on pens
FINN Valley dominated for large periods of the game with Cody Walsh and Rebecca McClogan coming close only to be stopped by strong defensive line of Illistrin.
Gaby O’Donnell could have put Illistrin ahead just before half time with a lovely weighted pass by Rebecca McGlinchey on O’Donnnell but Rachel Lawne got back to make the tackle.
Finn Valley pushed hard in second half but shots for Caoimhe McGlynn and Cora McLaughlin well saved by the excellent Orla Corry in the valley net. With game in dying minutes of extra time a long ball out by the ill sure defence to the running Rebecca McGlinchey who broke clear only for the late challenge by Catherine Elliot.
Finn Valley will be looking at the missed chances but in fairness once they broke down the excellent defence they couldn’t get past Orla Corry, who saved two out of the five penalties to let her team lift the Arena 7 Plate.
Rosebowl final, Glenea Utd 0 – 2 Bonagee Utd
BONAGEE had the majority of chances in the first half, but solid defending my Glenea kept score 0-0 at half time.
10 minutes into second half Bonagee broke the deadlock when a corner by Hannah Hopkins was hit into the net by Michaela Carolan.
This topped off Michaela’s week after being brought into the Bonagee senior squad for her debut against Finn Valley on Thursday night.
With 5 minutes remaining Hopkins extended Bonagees lead. Helena McGee had a chance close to end of game to bring game back within there reach, only for a great save by the Bonagee ‘keeper to seal a win for Bonagee.
