BRETT MCGINTY faces Paul Ryan from Bay City in this evening’s welterweight final at the National Under-18 Championships.
The St Johnston man and Oakleaf ABC puncher defeated Jamie Harty and Jordan Myers last weekend and now goes in search of his eighth Irish title at the National Stadium tonight.
The Deele College student, a Europan Schoolboys bronze medalist and Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist, will be up against a fancied southpaw in Dubliner Ryan.
Last year, Ryan won a bronze medal at the AIBA World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia, losing to Dilshodbek Ruzmetov from Uzbekistan on a split decision in a semi-final.
These Under-18 Championships are being used by the IABA as part of the selection process for this year’s AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg.
McGinty has plenty of international experience, but hasn’t fought at a World Championships yet.
“I’ve been to the Europeans three times, but haven’t made the worlds yet – thankfully this year it’s my age for the Worlds so I want my name on the team,” he said.
“It’s always tough. The standard is very strong. I got over the line comfortably in the end last week, but the final will be tough too.”
