GLENGAD UNITED, winners of a quadruple last season, began the new campaign on a winning note last night in the Clubman Shirts League Cup.
In Group B, Shane Byrne’s team, who gave a debut to Shane Canning, a new recruit from Moville, overcame Greencastle 3-1 at Chapel Lane.
Nigel McMonagle fired Glengad ahead and captain John Gerard McLaughlin put them two in front early in the second half.
Greencastle did threaten to make a game of it when they pulled one back, but Paul Anthony McDermott bagged a third.
Glengad host Clonmany Shamrock, whom they pipped to the League title last season and who they beat in the final of this competition in May, on Sunday at The Crua.
Clonmany were not only paired with Glengad in the group phase this time, but were also included with Clonmany Reserves. Last night at Shamrock Park, a Mark McLaughlin hat-trick gave the first team a comfortable 8-1 win.
A double from Michael Devlin and one apiece from Aaron Harkin, Ferghal Harkin and Paddy Doherty secured the big win.
In Group A, Cockhill Youths overcame Rasheney 3-2. Declan ‘Oggie’ McLaughlin and John Grant were on the scoresheet for Rasheney, but Under-18 player Michael Owen Doherty’s brace and another by Shaun Doherty gave Cockhill a narrow win.
Harry McQuillan’s double helped Redcastle United to a 3-0 success over Carrowmena at Foyle Park with Darragh McConway bagging the other.
In Group C last night, Illies Celtic and Culdaff played out a 2-2 draw – see Charlie Collins’ match report here – while Aileach FC came from behind to defeat Buncrana Hearts 2-1 at The Lakeside – see Chris McNulty’s match report here.
