REIGNING ULSTER Senior League champions Cockhill Celtic have been hit with a hammer injury blow ahead of the start of the new season.
Four-in-a-row USL champions Cockhill, treble winners last season, will be without the influential Malachy McDermott for the best part of the 2016/17 campaign.
McDermott, who was the FAI’s Intermediate Player of the Year in 2013, has been pivotal to Cockhill’s dominance in recent years.
McDermott sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury while playing for Moville in the Michael Murphy Sports Junior A Football Championship against Downings in July.
McDermott has been pivotal to Cockhill’s dominance of the USL in recent seasons and his loss will be acutely felt around the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds as Cockhill embark on the defence of their crowns.
